  • 本研究旨在分析比較〈純真年代〉兩個中文譯本,譯本分別由兩家不同的出版社出版, 研究譯文是否正確表達關於心理掙扎、性別議題的主題。採用紐馬克的語義翻譯及溝通翻譯、劉宓慶的翻譯策略作為研究框架。本論文分為三個部分,首先,比較分析詞彙、句型、文法和慣用語的翻譯。第二部分析哪些翻譯策略是最頻繁的。第三部分是分析探討出版社如何利用內文本,設定小說的類型及針對特定的讀者群。此研究總結余而彥的版本採用隱諱的翻譯風格;然而艾莉兒的版本多為直譯,比較無法表達原著原本的風格。整體而言,余而彥的翻譯比艾莉兒翻譯忠實,因為譯文的訊息和風格跟華頓原文相符。除此之外, 譯本的序文透露出版社的意圖,可以推斷出版社如何設定小說的類型和讀者的種類。研究發現譯者應該要加強原著中文化背景的知識,了解中文語句的結構。透過研究中譯本的比較,研究者期盼此研究能讓在台灣的文學愛好者能有機會品味小說中主要的主旨和意思。


    This study aims to examine two different Chinese translations of The Age of Innocence by two publishers to compare and contrast the differences between them in conveying the themes related to psychic struggle and gender issues. Paragraphs touching upon the major themes of the novel will be offered as the template for the comparative study of Chinese translations of the novel. Applying Newmark’s theory and Liu-Ming-Chin’s strategies, the researcher divides this study into three parts: one locates translation problems and makes a critique of them as they relate to lexis, syntax, grammar and idiomatic expression, etc; another tries to determine what kind of translation strategies are the most feasible ones in conveying the major themes of the novel; the other will aim to discover three publishers’ ideology through peritext to speculate how they define the novel to which genre and what kind of readership they target at. The findings profess that Yu’s version retains covert translation style whereas Ai’s version is less faithful. In general, Yu, Er-yen's version stays truer and more faithful than another translator Ai, Li-er due to its clarity and adherence to Edith Wharton’s original ideas and style. In addition, from the Chinese translations' prefaces we can discern that both publishers have their own preference in determining the genres of novel and types of target readers. The findings also suggest that translators should strengthen their cultural background knowledge of the original work and understanding of Chinese syntax structures. Throughout the comparative study of the Chinese translations of the novel, it is highly expected that more essential themes and ideas in the novel can be fully appreciated for the non-native readers who take great interest in literature.
