The research uses the case study of Nanjichang Resettled Tenement to evaluate the opportunities and restrictions of privatized public space by examining how local residents interact in a social housing setting in Taipei.
Public space in collective housing can be perceived as an open outdoor area within the confines of a residential development that can be used by residents and their guests on a shared basis. However, the public spaces in Nanjichang had been used differently than intended. The research explains how there are difference between perceptions of original designer and local residents.
Nanjichang had been included as part of the urban renewal project by Taipei city government. The characteristics of Nanjichang’s public spaces have developed over the years according to the needs of the residents. It is important to take into account regarding of living style of residents, in order to suggest more suitable design principles
The combination of different research methods revealed the lifestyle of the residents, their perception of public environment, and how residents occupy space in front of their units. Although the privatization process closed off some areas, it also improved usability for certain residents. This behavior is part of the hidden rules within the community.
Throughout the investigation, certain forms of behavior were observed and later confirmed by the collected data. The behavior of Nanjichang residents developed over the years and their hidden rules are a reflection of their lifestyle. These hidden rules are respected among residents and help achieve a better sense of community. This research not only suggest design principles for further development, but also re-evaluate typical design methods of top-down approach for space planning.
