The objective of this study is to comment on the researcher’s translation of the English version of the novel Bliss written by the Turkish writer Ömer Zülfü Livaneli. The main activities necessitated by the translation process are used as a vehicle to embark on a wider discussion of translation theories and techniques in general in relation to literary works.
This thesis is structured in four chapters. The first chapter outlines the motivation and purpose of the study, and also introduces the novel Bliss, its author Ömer Zülfü Livaneli, and gives a brief book review. The second chapter describes the researcher’s translation planning process, including preparation before translation, the comprehension and interpretation processes, as well as the difficulties often encountered during a translation project. A number of established translation theories are also discussed in this chapter. The third chapter highlights some of the principles and strategies that were applied in translating this novel, presents feedback from readers, and discusses how mistranslated passages can be improved. Finally, the concluding chapter gives opinions and suggestions based on what the researcher has learned from the translating work.
It is hoped that the ideas and strategies discussed in this study will provide a context for translators to consider more fully the purpose of translation, to better understand the needs of readers of the target text, and, finally, to improve the readability and quality of their translations.
