  • 在全球化的影響下,多語多文化的國家之人民於不同環情境下轉換語言之趨勢十分明顯。由於語言轉換的普遍化,人們對自我認同的感知變得複雜,特別是青年世代。為了解決語言使用與自我認同之間的爭論,本研究探討新加坡華裔青年的族群認同、在不同情境下多語的使用頻率、以及兩者之間的關係。共有二十名新加坡華裔青年參與此項研究,並回答一系列語言使用頻率以及族群認同的相關問題。在語言使用頻率的方面,問卷針對青年在家庭、友誼、宗教、學校和工作等五種場域上使用英語、中文及漢語方言的頻率。研究結果顯示新加坡華裔青年的語言習慣已偏向英語。此外,研究發現他們的族群語言(中文和漢語方言)與族群認同之間缺乏相關連性。這結果可歸因於語言轉移的三大面向(分別是政策實施、文化與環境、及語言的社會功能)和新加坡文化及認同的同質化。事實證明,像新加坡這樣多語多文化的國家,並沒有遵循「一種語言,一種認同」的原則,而且在一個全球化程度高的國家,青年人對原生族群的依戀也較少。


    Under the effects of globalization, the tendency for multilingual speakers to shift their language use in different domains became evidential in multicultural countries. Due to the growing language shift, identities became increasingly complex, especially among younger generation today. To tackle the constant debate about the relationship between language use and identity, this study aims to advance the understanding of ethnic identity and current language practice among Singaporean-Chinese young adults in various domains, and to investigate the relationship between these two variables. A total of twenty participants were recruited to answer a series of questions regarding the frequency of their language use (English, Mandarin, and Chinese dialects) in different language domains (Family, Friendship, Religion, School, and Work) and the overall attitude towards their ethnic identity. With descriptive statistics, results show that the daily language practice among Singaporean-Chinese young adults has transformed to a pro-English environment. In addition, there is a lack of correlation and statistical significance between their use of ethnic languages (Mandarin and Chinese dialects) and ethnic identity. This outcome can be attributed to three major aspects of language shift (implementation of policy, culture and environment, and social functions of language), and the homogenization of culture and identity in Singapore. This has proven Singapore, a multicultural and multilingual country, does not follow the “one language to one identity” principle, and that youth of a more globalized country express less attachment to their ethnic roots.
