Falling, collapsing, electric shock, and flying objects are major occupational hazards in Taiwan. In the construction industry, falling is the number occupational hazard in the past ten years.
This study adopts Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Visual Programming Language (VPL) technologies to help reduce the risk in construction sites. Automated procedures are developed to identify openings and to install fall-prevention equipment in BIM. BIM technologies are maturing and adoption rate has kept increasing. The 3D nature of BIM can help achieve better designs and help construction planning. Dynamo is a VPL that can extend Autodesk Revit to develop new functionalities. By using the developed automated procedures in this research, openings in the BIM model can be identified automatically. Model components representing are also created and installed by developed procedures to prevent falling. Thus, the developed procedures can greatly improve the efficiency of safety planning and in turn reduce falling hazards during construction.
