Conducting on-line shopping has become an important shopping activity in the recent days. The construction of the Internet bookstore is also an important Internet market. This study is intended to investigate the interface usability of the Internet bookstore and user experience. The important design factors regarding the usability of the Internet bookstore will be explored. How interface usability may affect user experience will also be studied. It is hoped that the user interface design of current Internet bookstores can be improved and the users’ satisfaction can be enhanced.
The experiment in this study includes two stages: (1) The investigation of current Internet bookstore user interface. That is, by understanding the function and procedure, interface satisfaction rate, and system usability based on interview process, design recommendations pertinent to users’ requirements can be proposed. (2) Conducting validate experiment. That is, based on the results generated from the first stage together with summaries from relevant literature, validate experiment was conducted.
The experiment was planned based on a 2 (information representation styles) by 3 (product photo styles) two-way ANOVA design. There are two levels in the independent variable of information representation style: (a) Information is represented as a whole: All the information was represented within the same page like most of the Web page design style. (b) Information is partially represented: Information is categorized first. Users can click on the designed bookmarks to view the intended information. There are three levels in the independent variable of product photo style: (a) Single photo: Only the first photo is shown on the information column. (b) Switching photos: Users can view the product name and product photo by moving the computer mouse. (c) Photos are all shown: All the photos are shown within one page. Based on the experiment, the results regarding user task performance, questionnaire for user interface satisfaction (QUIS), system usability scale (SUS), and user experience can be obtained.
The generated results indicated that (1) One of the major problems in the Internet bookstore is the problem of information overload. (2) The use of partial information representation style can help acquire best task performance. (3) The majority of the users like to interact with the “switching photos” and “photos are all shown” product representation styles. The style of “information is represented as a whole” is suitably used in Web browsing purpose. In addition, the style of “information is partially represented” is suitably used in Web searching purpose. (5) Most of the users like to interact with the “information is represented as a whole” together with “switching photos” style, and “information is partially represented” together with “photos are all shown” product representation style. Based on the experimental results, the factors of information representation and product photo styles indeed have significant influence on Internet bookstore.
