This study aimed to explore the relationships among the online literature search evaluating standards, search strategies and help seeking behaviors of graduate students. Firstly, for the qualitative method, the participants of in-depth interviews were 20 graduate students from eight universities of different areas in Taiwan. The interview findings, through the phenomenographic method of analysis of the students’ interview responses, were used as a foundation to develop the Online Literature Search Behaviors (OLSB) inventory, including search evaluating standards and search strategies, and the Online Literature Help Seeking (OLHS) inventory. For the quantitative method, the participants included 568 volunteer graduate students in Taiwan and 146 international graduate students from different countries. The relationships among search evaluating standards, search strategies and help seeking behaviors were then explored through analysis using the Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) statistical software.
The results of the qualitative component of this study revealed nine categories of online literature search behaviors, namely “Multiple Sources,” “Authority,” “Content,” “Quantitative Indicator,” “Clarity,” “Ease of Access,” “Integration,” “Judgment and Reflection,” and “Match,” and five categories of online literature help seeking behaviors, namely “Social Network face-to-face,” “Library Resources,” “Online Social Network,” “Advanced Search,” and “Extra Effort.” The results revealed that the graduate students were likely to use different academic website sources (i.e., “Multiple Sources”) and look deeply into contents (i.e., “Content) as their search evaluating standards through integrating different literatures from different web sources (i.e., “Integration”) and having purposeful thinking to judge and reflect on online academic articles (i.e., Judgment and Reflection”) as their search strategies when seeking literature. The results also found that the Taiwanese students outperformed the international students in both their online literature search behaviors and their help seeking.
