Knowledge has become the preeminent economic resource and has been actively involved in the global economic development. Commodity-based economy began to be obsolete and shifted towards knowledge-based economy in order to produce higher added value. Thus, companies are now more dependent on knowledge-based assets which also known as intellectual capital. In recent years, companies are focus to utilize their intellectual capital in order to increase their performance. Several studies implied that intellectual capital resources such as human capital, structural capital, and customer relations have become one of the most important key factors in cultivating companies’ competitive advantage and value. This research will distinctively focus on banking industry. As banking industry is considered as one of the most knowledge-intensive, skill-based, and relationship-rich industry. Nevertheless, the nature of banking industry operational activities are substantially derived by advance technology, and the quality of human resources. Thus, leveraging intellectual capital effectively allows companies to develop faster to sustain and thrive in the global market. Taiwan's well established banking industry, high penetration and technology-savvy environment has made the banking industry vastly competitive. Therefore, the author urges to find out the effect of intellectual capital on Taiwan commercial banks’ financial performances.
