A successful narrative infographic not only tells a good story, it also clarifies complex ideas, conveys messages and even changes target audience’s opinion, prompting them to take action. Therefore, narrative infographics are widely used in various areas such as commercial marketing, health care, and politics, where we’ve seen a rising demand for such design. When creating narrative infographics, however, many designers have found it difficult to find useful reference because of a lack of standardized design procedure. Oftentimes, designers can only start everything from scratch. In view of the status quo, this study aimed to make clear of the procedure of creating a narrative infographic. By using the participatory action research as the main methodological basis, the author worked simultaneously as a designer and researcher in a narrative infographic project. From a macro perspective, the author observed the whole design project, including the process, strategy, and how the project team worked, and classified the recorded results. From a micro perspective, the author examined every detail of the project through semi-structured interviews and content analysis, further exploring the general rules and details of knowledge translation and visualization.
Members of the design project team had different expertise, but they were all familiar with design literacy, which facilitated and accelerated the collaboration process. The variety among the members led to appropriate division of labor. Script designers focused on maintaining correctness of the simplified and visualized information on the infographic. Visual designers aimed to attract readers’ attention and design the overall layout of the infographic. With a consensus in mind and constant conversation, two sides were able to come up with more and better ideas, creating a successful infographic.
This study classified designing narrative infographics into the following parts: information collection, knowledge translation, script writing, and visualization. In particular, knowledge transformation also includes several steps, which are information collection, classification and comprehension. The details of the design procedure are as follows. First, pinpoint key information to be delivered. Second, brainstorm on the key information and translate it into interesting and well-structured scripts. Third, apply visualization design to the script to enhance readability and coherence of the context. In order to implement proper visualization, designers generally work on key words suitable or must be visualized once they become familiar with the script. Afterwards, designers will adjust the layout based on target users’ reading habit, and finish the design of the infographic, which conveys correct information with well-visualized context.
