During international architectural competitions, architects, both professionals and students, have tried to produce the most appropriate solutions to stand out from the rest of the proposals. In many cases, the architects' proposals are authentic witnesses to the times since, through them, the people's artistic concerns and worries are presented. Some of the benefits of participating in the competition include the improvement of the participants' skills, economic compensation, and new projects for the architects' portfolio.
In architecture, as for any professional design activity, the development of design needs a specific action plan and especially when applying for competitions. The design process in international design competitions requires a analytic process and a set of advanced skills in order to derive a unique concept. Although the final result includes the presentation of outstanding visual elements, these for the most famous international design competitions, have often been taken for granted. Thus, the uniqueness of the design concept and, consequently, a proper design strategy for the management of it, becomes an essential reference of the judgment to compete among the proposals.
This research is based on the experience of participating in several international architectural competitions during 2019 and 2020. The process involved analysis of the architecture competitions, study of design approach, and design concept development. By compiling evidence of the theoretical and practical process, the study demonstrates a design strategy focused on the design thinking process is a crucial stage for design concept development, increasing students' opportunities to generate design concepts to compete between outstanding visual proposals.
