Vocabulary knowledge is an important element in language learning. Learning vocabulary is necessary because it helps learners to develop listening and reading comprehension and helps them express themselves through speaking and writing. Appropriate vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) can improve learners’ learning performance and achievements. The purpose of this study was to explore the frequency of VLSs used by Taiwanese junior-high-school students with different proficiency levels, determine the difficulties learners face, and their perceptions of using VLSs. Fifty-two eighth-grade students (M = 29; F = 23) were recruited as participants and eight of them were recommended as interviewees by their teachers. The collected data were analyzed using both quantitative (questionnaire survey) and qualitative (individual interviews) methods. The participants’ English vocabulary learning difficulties were remembering multisyllabic words, being confused by polysemous words, and word retention. According to the survey results, more-proficient learners tended to use determination strategies more frequently and less-proficient learners applied metacognitive strategies more often. Finally, the interviewees mentioned the importance of using VLSs because these methods did help them enlarge their vocabulary size, become more confident, and improve their grades. The significance of the study is that it provides references for teachers to properly design the courses, instruct students with different approaches based on their language proficiency levels, and assist students when they encounter learning difficulties.
