The strip layout of a progressive die traditionally relies on the experience of the designer to draw and draft the strip under a 2D CAD design environment. However, this approach fails to consider the problems of real 3D space. Often, designers spend much time on the drawing work and cannot therefore design the progressive die with better material utilization. In view of this, we attempted to use Creo’s 3D CAD system and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to calculate material utilization and conduct the strip layout by establishing correlating formulas. The strip established by this design approach possesses the feature of a rapid design change. When a designer has selected the layout mode in the Excel spreadsheet, the system automates the transfer of the strip layout parameters back to Creo to produce a 3D CAD model of the strip.
The design procedure proposed in this thesis for strip layout of progressive die takes the function of Excel Analysis in Creo as the core. It has the advantage of providing a simple operation by simply entering the calculation formula of strip layout into the cells of Excel spreadsheet. There is no need to use an application programming interface or write any programming codes to calculate the layout parameters and material utilization. A designer who uses this design procedure in coordination with Creo’s parametric design to layout the strips can achieve the aims of enhancing material utilization and design efficiency.
