The purpose of this study is to understand the technological trends in this field through patent analysis of Augmented Reality technology. Through the use of USPTO and Espacenet patent databases for search, the search results of the augmented reality technology, the overall patent trends in the United States and Europe, main patent applicants, and main patentees. Then, using the patent family of the main patentees to understand the main patent patentees’s international application strategies and the main application countries.
Afterwards, through the reading of Microsoft's patent information, we further analyzed the technology and efficacy, and finally made a technology-function matrix analysis and a technical fishbone to understand the direction of its technological development. Also it provides research and development personnel in the field of augmented reality for the technical Reference basis.
The results of this study could be concluded as follows: (1)The augmented reality technology is in the stage of technological growth, and the overall number of patent applications has increased year by year. (2)The main research and development countries in augmented reality technology are U.S., Japan, and South Korea. (3)These international application strategy of main patentee mostly rely on PCT patent system. (4)The main patent applicant Microsoft's technology distribution, mainly for image processing, data conversion processing and three-dimensional space. (5)In the whole image processing technology of augmented reality, its technical goal is to mix virtual image and real images. (6)The goal of data conversion processing in augmented reality is to develop a natural user interface (NUI), and this development is mainly focused on improving accuracy. (7)In the three-dimensional space of augmented reality, the key technology is spatial registration, followed by the development of inside-out which improves the accuracy of registration.
