In order to improve the safety and convenience of people driving commuting, autonomous driving has been developed as the hottest topic of automotive industry. Woodside Capital Partners, a research firm, estimates that by 2020, all vehicles must be equipped with at least level-3 automation, and by 2030, all vehicles will ahieve level-5 automation. It is foreseeable that the automotive industry can bring huge business opportunities, and ICT technology companies and traditional automative manufacturers are racing to develop the latest autonomous driving technology. This study attempts to draw a profile of autonomous driving industry. Yearly trends of applications, main patentees, the top-ten IPC of autonomous driving industry are analyzed by searching patent information of US, European and Chinese patent databases based on keywords of autonomas driving. The main patentees are selected based on the top-ten main patentees having the most patent applications than others, and an Navigant Research assessment of autonomous driving companies based on execution and strategy is also referred. The autonomous driving technology of main US patentees focuses on course control, navigation systems, ranging and computing systems, anti-collision and steering systems; the autonomous driving technology of the main European patentees focuses on navigation, distance control, direction control, speed control , anti-collision, parking assistance, warning system, etc. Technologies and patent portfolios of selected applications of main patentees in each region are analyzed and discussed.
