WIPO會議上曾對圖像設計如此評價：「GUI和Icons的設計保護已成為工業設計保護之主流!」。但對於如此重要議題上，我國卻鮮少對其保護及布局探討之論述，另外在專利分析方面，目前未有針對設計專利之分析方法，因此本研究之目的在為產業帶來APP相關開發上的依循與建議，尋找出GUI和Icons最適切之專利保護方式及布局策略。
本研究以Google公司在美國申請之設計專利為分析標的，嘗試以創新之視覺化分析方法，以商標和次級資料為輔，「將設計專利對應上適用之產品與服務」，解析Google公司全部之美國圖像設計專利，進而分析Google公司設計專利布局策略模式，並給予產業設計專利保護參考及建議。研究結果簡述如下：
(1)圖像設計應用與分析部分，本研究發現Icons及GUI設計專利於美國市場呈現爆發性正成長。(2)專利分析與檢索上，本文以Google公司全部設計專利進行人工比對，以實證視覺化分析法的可行性。並在檢索式制定上，建議圖像設計專利僅以專利權人、日期、分類號等較寬廣的檢索式，搭配視覺化分析與分類，能得出相當精準的結果。(3)Google的布局與產業建議部分，其專利申請的特色在於：共用核心設計元素，反覆將設計專利用於其他服務及產品；大量申請基本幾何與指示性圖樣；對於顯示幕應用之環境狀況相當重視。
本研究結合判決檢視GUI與Icons之法律發展歷程、人工比對並以Google全部設計專利驗證檢索式、自創全新的設計專利分析方式、將Google全部設計專利對應上應用的APP，並人工分析比對了該公司全部的設計專利，期許此研究與Google之個案探討作得為產業參考與發展之有利建議。

WIPO had mentioned that, “To some degree, industrial design protection for GUI and Icons has already become the mainstream.” This study retrieved all of Google’s US design patents and discussed GUI and Icons in depth for making a recommendation of Design Patent’s application and strategy to the industry.
This study created a new visual methodology of design patent analysis, which mix design method and patent analysis, trying to use trademark and secondary data to view the relationship between Google’s design patents and its APP.
This research aim at Google's GUI and Icon Design Patent, trying to understand the strategy of Google from an analytic point of view. The results are shown below:
(1) GUI and Icon design patent applications increased sharply in the US. (2) The new visual methodology is available and valuable for design patent analysis. And making a broad limitation for patent search is suggested. (3) About Google’s design patent protection, this research shows some point. First, Google consecutively used its claimed design elements in different APPs and new products. Second, Google aimed at filing basic geometric and indicative figures in design applications. Third, Google paid attention to the shape of display screen which means Google had considered about the environment when its interface was used.
