This study explored the effects of light source, ambient illuminance, font size and line space on visual performance and visual fatigue. For visual performance the results showed that display medium, font size, line space had significant effects on search time. Electrophoretic electronic ink display had shorter search time than Chlorestic Liquid Crystal display.Search time for font size 3.0mm was shorter than font size 2.0mm; for the line space 66% than for 50%.Ambient Illuminance, display medium, font size, line space had significant effects on accuracy. Accuracy was highest for 1500lux; accuracy of electrophoretic electronic ink display was higher than Chlorestic Liquid Crystal display; accuracy was lowest for font size 2.0mm and highest for font size 3.0mm; and accuracy was higher for line space 66% than 50%. As for visual fatigue, results showed that light source and ambient illuminance had non-significant effects on change of CFF (Critical Flicker Fusion). Light source and ambient illuminance also had non-significant effect on subjective visual fatigue.Set the E-paper font size at 3.00mm, line space at 66%, and ambient illuminance at 1500lux, could get better visual performance. Reading electronic paper under fluorescent lamp and high ambient illuminance, could result in less visual fatigue.
