Tourism contributes to a large portion of the world economy yet causes noticeable environmental impacts. There has been growing concern in many countries on the tourism activities that bring substantial issues in sustainability, including the destruction of local ecology, producing dissipation, and overusing energy. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This not only draws the attention of the tourism industry on sustainability but also encourages researchers to study sustainable tourism.

This study aims to review the development trajectories as well as examine the major research topics in tourism sustainability. We adopt main path analysis (MPA) to identify knowledge flow and visually illustrate the development trajectory of the sustainable tourism field. Over the period between 1976 and 2021, a total of 6,573 scholarly papers related to sustainable tourism are collected from the Scopus database. From the results of MPA, we discover that there are three major development stages. The early stage focuses on the environmental relation and the concept of sustainable tourism. In the 2nd stage, researchers begin to assess sustainability in tourism and examine knowledge gaps between tourism and climate change. Research in the most recent stage shifts to discuss the tourism market and assess research status. In addition to MPA, cluster analysis is applied to identify 7 main research topics. Among these topics, the knowledge exchange between Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism topics is the strongest. Moreover, in order to gain a view on future research, we summarize future research proposed in recent review literature that addresses sustainable tourism.

This study offers a comprehensive review and a state-of-the-art summary in the tourism sustainability field. It can help researchers and practitioners have a better understanding of the knowledge development and significant topics.
