  • Despite the fact that many studies have investigated factors that affect project success, relatively few have specifically explored the effects of PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) Guide. The contribution of PMBOK to project success was studied to disclose cross-country similarities and differences by conducting a multinational investigation. A questionnaire survey of professional engineers in the construction industry (project managers, stakeholders, and team members) was performed in Taiwan, Indonesia and Vietnam. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the relationship between PMBOK techniques/tools/skills (TTS) and project success. In this study, the Project Success Index (PSI), which adapts the frameworks of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), and importance-performance analysis (IPA) are also presented to evaluate the project success. The proposed novel PSI framework along with the IPA can help construction practitioners to implement effective managerial strategy, improve project performance, and improve efficiency in the use of management resources thus enhance project success. The empirical study showed that effective application of PMBOK TTS can enhance project success. Moreover, construction practitioner can develop marketing strategies to improve project success based on the importance and perceived performance in each quadrant of IPA.
