一般生產製造模式可以分為預測式生產（Build to Forecast, BTF）、計畫式生產（Make to Stock, MTS）、接單裝配式生產（Assembly to Order,ATO）和接單式生產（Make to Order, MTO）。過去的製造商皆以預測式和計畫式的生產模式為主，其特色為依據市場需求作預測，以庫存存貨管理產品，可以快速反應顧客需求，但製造商須承擔庫存之風險；接單裝配式生產模式主要是以零組件或半成品進行備料庫存，當顧客下單後，可以在短時間內快速反應交期；而接單式生產模式是由顧客下訂單時才開始進行備料，故其備貨前置時間較長，主要是以客製化產品為主。
現今的產業環境裡，工業電腦（Industrial Computer）製造業已不再是將存貨視為必要的資產，過多的庫存將會增加企業的資本壓力，進而喪失競爭優勢，而此產業主要是以客製化生產來滿足不同的顧客需求，因此，如何達到最佳化的接單裝配式存貨管理（Inventory Management），將是個案研究探討的主軸。

ATO mode means manufacturer prepare components or the manufacturer mode is a combination of BTF,MTS and MTO.That means the manufacturer can produced customize product in shorter lead time from customer. This mode is mainly adopted for customization product also with longer lead time for material preparation.
In the past , BTF and MTS were mainly adopted in the production. The advantage of adopting BTF and MTS mode is to response customer request rapidly by doing forecast based on market demand also preparing inventory accordingly. However, manufacturer would take the risk of inventory.
In current Industry environment, inventory is no longer the essential asset to Industrial Computer manufacturers. Enterprise could suffer from the capital pressure from high level inventory and lose core competence. Therefore, customized products/production is the main stream to meet various demands from customers. How to optimize production to response customer requirements with less semi-product inventory will be the major topic of this case study.
