The design of a workplace has been proved to have influence on people health and wellbeing. The importance of access to quality views recently become more noticed, since some green building rating systems such as LEED and WELL also included window views to their evaluated systems. The connection to outdoor views would physiologically and psychologically influence users of the space. Considering the positive impact of window views content to individual performance, studying on how quality views could affect our attention and memory might be useful for window design in work space to increase occupants’ cognitive performance.
This study examines 13 students’ engagement performance with use of brainwave measurement. The participants, which were divided into two groups based on their gender, were exposed virtually to three kinds of window views: exterior wall view, blue sky view, and natural greeneries view. Then, they would be asked to do the engagement task after each view stimuli while their brainwave response was recorded. The data acquired then was analyzed using statistical methods of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to evaluate whether window views have any effects to students’ cognitive activity and which window views content has higher effect.
The results indicate that there is connection between the content of window views and students’ task engagement. But statistically, the difference between these views effects is not significant. However, this brainwave response result is also influence by other factor such as subjective preference towards window views.
