臺灣最早的專門學校為明治32年（1899）設立的總督府醫學校，直至大正8年（1919）開始陸續設立臺北高等商業學校、商業專門學校、農林專門學校、大正15年(1926)設立臺南高等商業學校以及昭和6年（1931）設立的臺南高等工業學校。然而在大正時期因實施南進政策，因此將臺北高等商業學校定位為培育前往南支南洋從事海外貿易的商業人才的學校。戰後由國民政府接收，後轉由國立臺灣大學法學院接收管理，沿用原來的校舍。儘管歷經多次制度的變革，因應使用需求將建物與空間增改建，但校區內仍舊保有完整的建築，形成今日的國立臺灣大學社會科學院徐州校區，同時作為日治時期臺北高等商業學校的重要歷史見證。
本論文即以日治時期設立的臺北高等商業學校為研究對象，首先透過文獻蒐集，分析該校設立之原因與過程。接著，經由校友訪談，瞭解教學活動與學生生活，最後探討課程的演變與建築配置之關係，以及該校建築的特色，同時進行現地調查，釐清戰後該校建築的改變。
研究結果得知，由於臺北高等商業學校定位為培育南進海外貿易人才的學校，為實踐設校目的，開設有南支南洋經濟事情、熱帶衛生學、貿易經營論以及語言等課程。在校園的規劃上，由於在設校之初已確定課程性質及空間需求，因應這些特有的課程，設置如打字教室、機具教室以及簿記教室等特殊教室。最具代表性的本館，採複合式的方式設計，結合講堂、校長室、事務室、會議室、來賓室、應接室等空間為一體，呈現宏偉的建築外觀。其中還有商品陳列室，展示南洋各地特有之商品。同時立面及各空間之室內都有精緻的細部裝修，在建築施工與技藝上來看，都具有相當高的水準。

Taiwan Sotokufu Medical School(總督府醫學校), which was the earliest vocational school in Taiwan, was built in 1899. Until 1919, Taihoku College of Commerce(臺北高等商業學校), College of Commerce(商業專門學校) , College of Agriculture and Forestry(農林專門學校), Tainan College of Commerce( 1926 ) (臺南高等商業學校) and Tainan Technical College(1931) (臺南高等工業學校) were established consecutively. In virtue of the Policy of South China and South Seas during Taisho Period (1912-1926), Taihoku College of Commerce was positioned to educate and train personnel for engaging overseas trade in South Seas region. The school was taken over by the Nationalist government after the war and then managed by College of Law, NTU. No matter what the school systems were changed, building expansion and renovation carried out, the original buildings of the school still remained intact. And later on College of Social Science, NTU (Xuzhou campus) was formed so that turned into a site of historical testimony.
Taihoku College of Commerce, the object of this study, was built in Japanese colonization period. Through collection and search for related documents with which to analyze the ground and process of the school establishment. Interviews with alumni led to understand student's way of life and teaching activities at school. Finally the architectural characteristics of the school and correlation between course evolvement and building layout were carefully studied. Meanwhile, the on-site investigation clarified the transition of the school buildings after the war.
As stated above, Taihoku College of Commerce was positioned to educate and train personnel for engaging overseas trade in South Seas region. Courses offering were South Seas Economic Affairs, Tropical Hygiene, Trade and Management and Languages. The planning on campus at the beginning met the need of special courses and space requirements accordingly. Special classrooms were set for typing, machines and tools and bookkeeping. The typical main building adopted composite design linked lecture room, principal room, administration room, conference room, guest room, reception room and display room for products from South Seas region made the whole building look magnificent. The facade and interior space appeared detailed and delicate design. From the viewpoint of building construction and technology it possessed relatively high standard.
