Recently, sustainability has become a trendy subject in business and academia, as the last decades saw a wealth of research on the roles of sustainability in supply chain management. The purpose of the present paper is twofold. First, it attempts to explore the knowledge structure and development trajectories of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) research. Second, it clarifies the differences and relationships between SSCM and green supply chain management (GSCM) concepts. The comprehensive literature review takes 1,777 papers from 1997 to early 2020. Multiple methods, including main path analysis, research group analysis, and content analysis, are applied. Main path analysis is a citation-based method that is able to visualize knowledge trajectories in a scientific field. Research group analysis is employed to examine the collaboration as well as knowledge transmission among significant research groups. The most popular research country/region/industry within the field are identified through content analysis.

We discover three SSCM development stages that existed over the past two decades. It is observed that focus on supply chain management studies has shifted gradually from environmental concern to the three pillars of sustainability (i.e., environment, economy, and society). Between SSCM and GSCM, there are overlaps in their definitions, and the main differences are that GSCM generally emphasizes the environment, while the SSCM covers not only the environment but also the economy and society. Accordingly, to some degree, the SSCM can be viewed as an extension of the GSCM. The results provide a fresh perspective on SSCM research and will help future researchers to better understand the knowledge structure and development trajectories of this field.
