「建築皮層」在現代建築中占著重要的地位，顛覆了傳統建築對於建築表面的定義，長久以來，建築皮層只是模糊的概念，在傳統建築中，建築外牆體同時具有承重與分隔功能，較無結構層次之分，而建築形式也依循著古典比例或裝飾等原則；而現代建築對於建築表面的設計則有別於傳統建築，由於建造的新技術與材料的新發明，建築構造有個很多元的發展空間，使建築形式從約束中解放，同時也將建築皮層的概念從建築量體中獨立出來。

由於赫爾佐格與德穆隆建築團隊建築作品之建築皮層的設計運用了豐富的材料與多元的構造方式，對於現代建築形式有別於傳統建築形式之間的差異性，做了很好的註解，所以以此團隊建築作品為例，從「結構」、「功能」與「審美」三面向探討現代建築皮層，希望透過分析建築師的設計思維與其設計建築皮層在各方面表現的歸納，了解建築皮層在現代建築中所扮演的角色以及重要性。

The theme of architecture skin is a specific concept in modern architecture, differing from the traditional viewpoint on the facade. Before the age of modern architecture, the idea of building skin is indefinite. The masse of wall must perform the functions of load-bearing and spatial division and being constructed under typical principal. Modern development of building materials and technology enables the architectural form to being free from traditional constraints and different skin expressions become possible.

The team of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron who adopts new construction methods by using a large amount of modern materials serves a convincible example contrast with the traditions. This paper explores some of the team’s projects through an analytical frame, which comprises three aspects--- structure, function and beauty, for the purpose to categorize the characteristics of the architecture skin in their works.
