The objective of this research is to study the design and control of the purification and recovery process which recovers lactic acid from its aqueous solution. First, we select the most suitable thermodynamic and kinetic models to describle the process characteristics, and then use the Aspen Plus○R to perform steady state plant design and simulation. The plant design procedure is proposed to obtain one flowsheet, namely using a reactive distillation column to carry out the esterification of lactic acid. The total annual cost(TAC) is used as the design criterion to obtain the optimal process and the operating condition, Then Aspen Dynamics TM is employed to execute dynamic simulation. Finally, a variety of disturbances are used to verify the versality of the proposed control configuration.
