The use of smart phones to access Internet information would become more complex and time-consuming when more applications were installed on the phone. Therefore, the user interface of an application menu that help people to easily interact with the application will become even more important. This study first analyzed the launcher user interface of Android System, and further discussed the menu design of smart phone user interface. After that, the derived design concepts were applied to the interface design prototypes for experiment in order to discover the relationship between search efficiency and smart phone menu arrangement and interaction styles. This study was expected to improve the usability and user experience of the menu design of smart phone user interface.
This study adopted a 2 by 3 factorial design, i.e., 2 (menu arrangement) by 3 (interaction style), The factor of menu arrangement had two levels: (a) Thumbnail grid: The application items of menu were arranged in a grid; (b) Vertical stack: The application items of menu were sequentially arranged in a column. In addition, the factor of interaction style had three levels: (1) Alphabetic two-panel menu: The menu was composed of a main panel and sub-panels that were arranged in the alphabetical order; (2) Alphabetic list inlay menu: The menu was a list of inlay arranged in alphabetical order; (3) Alphabetic scroller menu: The menu was provided with a scroller that contained a pointer and an alphabet column. This study adopted a task-operating experiment to obtain the task performance, system usability, and user satisfaction results for further analysis.
The results of this study were as follows: (1) Arranging the menu items in a thumbnail grid could reduce the by-page search operation time; (2) Alphabetic scroller menu could effectively assist user to search applications; (3) Minimizing the number of times of user slide operation to increase efficiency; (4) The number of items within the menu page had less effect than the number of times of user slide operation on overall search operation time; (5) User's attention and exploration strategies must be considered in designing search assistance of menu interface to make user explore easily; (6) Search results should be presented at user's focal point on the application menu; (7) When utilizing prior knowledge for search assistance, an interaction designer should consider the use situation for user without this prior knowledge.
