小住宅作爲人們居住的空間，佔據了居住者一日中一半的時間，是日常裡最具重要性的生活空間。然而，小住宅的設計是具有地域性特徵的，從微觀的所在區域位置所帶來的基地條件到所處位置相應的氣候條件，都是影響到一個住宅設計和規劃中重要的因子。而除了格局配置的佈局，皮層材料的選擇和立面的樣式同樣在設計中扮演了重要的角色。
金屬皮層在臺灣的主要應用在商業建築、大廈和公共建築與建設上，相對於國外小住宅的設計而言，雖然金屬皮層在台灣也屬於普遍常見的建材，不過在臺灣既往的住宅使用中，金屬皮層多以頂樓加蓋或是局部增建的方式出現在住宅裡，使用方式也比較單一。相對於國外具有設計感和擁有對應功能的金屬皮層，在台灣真正經由設計而建造的金屬皮層小住宅的案子出現得比較晚。
金屬皮層在隔熱防火隔音的處理上的可動性高，可以依照需求去進行調整搭配，而且材料在工廠預鑄後現場組裝，施工簡便快速且能保持現場乾淨，還能夠減少營建廢棄物和對周遭環境的污染，透過參數化設計的滲入，皮層的選擇可以通過模擬開口的大小分佈和變化，事先模擬皮層效果和環境成效，在施工前可以進行修正以達到更好的預期效果。金屬皮層帶來的便利性和可能性為小住宅設計提供了更多的選擇和嘗試的機會。
隨著時間的衍生，金屬皮層在國外的接受率和使用度也相當普及，日本和歐美有很多很好的金屬皮層小住宅案例和技術可以供參考研究，從中學習，而東南亞近幾年來也有出現值得參考的案例。本研究藉由案例分析的過程中，找出值得參考的金屬皮層小住宅例子，根據運用的皮層類型和使用契機做分類，去解析各別的材料、構造和手法，更深切地瞭解金屬皮層如何應用於小住宅中，以及運用後所帶來的效果和環境回應。

Residential houses, as people ’s living spaces, which occupy half of the day of the tenants, are the most important living space in daily life. However, dwellings have regional characteristics, from the very basic of site's conditions to the corresponding climatic conditions in the location, factors influencing the design and planning of a dwelling. In addition to the layout, the choice of facade materials and the design of the facade also played an important role in the design.
Metal facades are mainly used in commercial buildings, high rise buildings, public buildings and public constructions in Taiwan. Although metal facades are common building material in Taiwan, the metal facade has been used as a form of roofs or widely used in the expansion of the existing building. Compared with the design of housing abroad, which has corresponding functions and much more sense of design, the cases of small residential houses in Taiwan appear relatively late.
Metal facade is variety, it has different fireproof, heat and sound insulation choices, which can be adjusted in accordance with the different requirements. Also, material sent to the site after pre-fabrication can be assembled on-site quickly, the construction process is simple and fast, keeping the site clean and neat while reducing construction waste and minimize pollution to the surrounding environment.
Through the ease of parametric design, the distribution of opening and the corresponding effect can be simulated, therefore changes can be made before actual construction, hence, achieving better results. Convenience and the possibility of metal facade provide more choices and variety to small residential design.
With the derivation of time, the acceptance rate and usage of metal skins abroad are popular. There are many examples and technologies of small residential design with metal skins that worth to learn, especially in Japan, and Western. Besides, more and more references are prompt up from Southeast Asia which has relatively similar climate as in Taiwan. In this study, through the process of case analysis, examples of small dwellings with metal facades are summarized and categorized into four divisions. According to each type, the material used, tectonic combination and technique used are classified and analyzed. In the last part of this research, a small residential design using metal facade is proposed, applying the four categories of metal facade and observe the corresponding environmental response.
