In Taiwan, military English has received asymmetric attention to the big investment. This study aims at exploring the language needs Analysis on English use among Air Force personnel in Taiwan. Once the English language needs are identified, the pedagogical instructions and the contents can be examined in the current curriculum for further studies. A two-phase investigation was conducted in this study with both quantitative and qualitative methods. The first phase was an on-line survey to domain experts to establish an authentic task list. The second phase was to administer the questionnaire adapted from the task list of first phase on Air Force personnel. The participants consisted of two groups, which were FMS-experienced AF personnel/ FMS candidates (N=110) and non-FMS-experienced AF personnel (N=105). In the interview section, seven interviewees were chosen from the volunteers of the two groups respectively. The instruments were the questionnaire of 5-point Likert scale and semi-structured interview.
The results of quantitative data show that for both groups, the most frequent task is “read technical orders/ materials” and the most difficult task is “interpret for official meetings”. First, based on the findings, lack of training influences non-FMS-experienced personnel’s willingness to communicate even the task is obligated. Secondly, non-FMS-experienced group felt every individual task is very difficult to them. Also, for both groups, there are non-linguistic difficulties including formal occasion and psychological stress, terminology and cross fields, culture difference. Lastly, the wants about four language skills, the results show the trait of language needs, which is multidirectional and complicated. The present study provides ESP teachers some useful information about authentic ME tasks, the direction for supervisors who responsible for making decision and hopefully prepare pre-service air force personnel to meet their future challenges.
