    ABSTRACT
There are a plethora of studies focusing on investigation language learning strategies used among students at university level in different countries. However, few studies have concentrated on exploring students’ use of speaking strategies at high-school level under the Vietnamese context. This study aimed to figure out EFL speaking strategies used among Vietnamese high-school students by answering three research questions as follows. (1) How often do Vietnamese high-school students use EFL speaking strategies? (2) Do English learning experiences have any significant relationship with students’ use of EFL speaking strategies? (3) What are Vietnamese high-school students’ perceptions of EFL speaking strategies? A questionnaire of five categories (social affective strategies, fluency-oriented strategies, accuracy-oriented strategies, negotiation for meaning while speaking, and compensation strategies) including 27 items followed with semi-structured interviews were applied to collect the data. Two hundred and fifty-three EFL students from different high schools in different regions of Vietnam participated in answering the survey, among whom, nineteen took part in the semi-structured interviews voluntarily. The findings showed that speaking strategies in general were used at high frequency. Besides, negotiation for meaning while speaking was used the most frequently while accuracy-oriented strategies were used the least. In addition, there was no significant relationship found between years of learning English and the use of speaking strategies. Moreover, speaking strategies were considered essential to help students improve fluency and confidence when they speak English and students all thought that speaking strategies should be integrated into speaking class for them to get familiar with and practice regularly. Based on the findings of this study, teachers can be more selective in choosing speaking strategies for training to increase effectiveness and efficiency, and also help students to get a more satisfactory score in speaking part of the IELTS test.
