隨著城市與人口的快速膨脹與發展，人們所分配到可以使用的空間則變得越來越有限，為了因應變的狹小的空間，家具開始漸漸地有了移動性，考量收納與多種複合的功能使用方式，將多種不同的功能與用途融合到一個產品之中，因此形體可變的產品，漸漸的變成許多人的新選擇。
本研究首先探討這個時代的背景，為什麼我們開始會需要形體可變的家具?試著從不同的方向來探討這個問題，分別從房地產，薪資結構與人口組成的改變來了解事件的原因。再來探討形體可變產品的定義，從生物的形體變化，到服裝或是運輸工具上的變化。藉由歸納整理形體改變的操作手法與機械的變形原則，了解形體可變產品的形體改變過程。最後了解形體可便的產品在家具上的用途，家具的設計必須要讓使用者感到舒適，才會讓人想要一直使用，而家具要使用的順暢且方便，就必須要借助於人因工程的幫助，了解使用者的身體構造與使用的習慣。
本研究以椅子設計的觀點切入，並以創作的形式呈現研究的成果。在分析與整理形體可變的椅子設計相關資料後，用有時間軸與無時間軸做了兩大類的歸納，再區分為機能的改變以及形體的改變兩小類別。最後的設計以無時間軸的多功能形體改變椅子為主，利用本設計達到一個適合在小坪數空間中使用的多功能椅子。

With the growth of population and the expansion of cities, space that can be distributed to every person is less than before. In order to adapt to the limited living space, furniture is designed with the function of mobility, which takes both storage and multi-use functions into consideration. A product that can be used in several different ways, or one that can perform shape changings gradually becomes the new option for many people.
Three main issues are presented in the thesis. First, the research investigates the characteristic of this generation and focuses on the question why people start to need furniture which can be transformed in the shape. The answer is provided from three different aspects, the real estate, the salary structure and the population structure. Second, the research concentrates on the definition of the shape-changing product. Beginning with the transformation of biological bodies, clothes and vehicles, and then by concluding the method of their transforming and design principles, the procedure to transform a product, a shape-changing product, can be understood. Finally, the research discusses the use of the shape-changing product in every house. The design of furniture has to let the user feel comfortable, which can make him or her continuously like the product. For the purpose of using comfortably and conveniently, Human Factors is made use of to understand the user’s psychological make-up and habits.
This research pays more attention on the design of chairs and the research results are provided in the form of creation. By analyzing related information about shape-changing chairs, two generalizations can be set up — timeline and non-timline. For each generalization, there are two more subsections included — the change of function and shape. The final designed chair by the research is based on the non-timeline principle with multi-use functions and shape-changing ability. The chair is to fulfill the purpose that a transformable and multi-functioned product is suitable for a smaller living place nowadays.
