In recent years, population’s needs during rapid growth is an ongoing challenge for Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Residents considered that city life is increasingly hard to bear given the lack of sufficient infrastructure to accommodate the population growth, particularly the lack of public spaces. However, the official guidelines or the standard design criteria of public space development have not been issued. The overall objective of this research is to provide the insights information and guidelines in developing an active public park by investigating the existing public park in Phnom Penh. This research aims to apply a Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) method on the existing park and explores public preferences toward public parks in Cambodia cultural context through qualitative methods. Thurs, this research involved multiple data collection techniques such as visual documentation, behavioral mapping, casual observations, interview and questionnaire survey. The outcome of this research is to provide the necessary information about the types of users, use patterns, and daily users’ behaviors in the public park; this understanding helps urban designer/planner to evaluate the practical and effectiveness of existing parks. Besides, the recommendation regarding design features or elements base on the analyzing and findings will hopefully become a useful and efficient material for planning and developing future public parks that can meet the actual needs and perceptions of Phnom Penh residents.
