因為低廉的生產價格與優異的緩衝、隔絕套性,既有泡聚苯乙烯(保麗龍)產品以包 裝材料與食品容器為最大宗,但因為過去一時的氾濫與缺乏後續處理規劃,致使保麗龍在環 保領域背負了莫大的汙名。而在各項技術與規範臻至成熟的現代,若設計師對於材質的了解 仍僅限於道聽塗說的層級,我們將在當下失去許多可趁之機;反之,若能稍加深入地去了解 材料的本質、嘗試化劣勢為優勢並發揮材料其他特長,我們將發現在設計與環保的角度下, 其實保麗龍有著驚人的潛力。
本創作研究主旨在於以保麗龍做為產品材料而非包裝、運用在主體設計上,嘗試兼顧 生產與回收的考量並大幅延長產品生命週期。由案例分析可以歸納出幾種主要設計與加工手 法:模具發泡成型、熱線切割成型、手工雕刻成型、特殊表面處理、燃燒材料代換。期望藉 由本研究的整理與應用,可以成為以保麗龍為材料設計時的參考。而後經過工法實驗、設計 發想、草馍製作與電腦模擬等過程,發產出了三組作品:以熱線切割呈現出複雜型態的照明 雕塑、可快速組裝/拆解的布料披覆單椅,以及模鑄包裝兼本體的桌燈與地燈。
Due to the low manufacturing cost and superb insulating as well as shock-absorbing ability, existing applications of expanded polystyrene focused on food and product packaging, the mass quantity without proper waste management later lead to its infamy of environmental pollution. However, with further investigation into the quality of EPS, even from sustainable point of view one can still find great potential within. The main theme of this research is to utilize EPS as the product instead of the packaging, and the attempt to lengthen the life-cycle by keeping both manufacturing and recycling in consideration. Five major techniques can be concluded form the analysis of existing EPS designs- molding, wire-cutting, sculpting, surface treating and replace burning. To provide more reference for future designers, this thesis will include the research and experiments around the EPS material.
