Composite has been widely used in many application, because composite is high strength and still stable in many conditions. The composited should against numerous environments condition that could affect the performance of composite eg, moisture, temperature, and radiation. However, no literature is available explain as details the effect of environment on carbon fiber – bio plastic material composite. In this study, CF – BPM composite produced by hot pressing with film stacking/ laminate method. Composite specimens were immersion into difference kinds of water: distill water (pH: 7), normal water (pH: 6.5), sea water (pH: 8) for 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 days. After certain period of times measure the moisture absorption content, the dimensional swelling (length, width, and thickness), tensile test, thermal properties, electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding.
Effect of moisture absorption on different thickness of composite results moisture content increased with increased time, when increase the amount of fiber, which increase the layer of fiber (the thickness of fiber) also increased the moisture content. Effect of moisture absorption on mechanical properties of tensile test resulted that the ultimate tensile strength and young modulus decreased after immersion, this is could be the fact that the immersion of composite samples in water affect the interfacial adhesion between fiber and matrix and creates debonding and leads to decrease in mechanical properties. The elongation break increased, with increasing immersion time.
Effect of moisture absorption on thermal properties result that the immersion composite in distill, normal, and sea water decrease in Tg. SEM analysis show appearance of many holes of different shape and size, the holes more pronounce for the composite immerse in distill water, because in sea water presence the salt molecules: NaCl, which reduce the activity of water molecules.
Effect of moisture absorption on electrical conductivity of the composite resulted that the electrical conductivity increases with increasing the volume filler of carbon fiber, and for the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE), Bio plastic cannot absorb the electromagnetic wave interference. When the EMI SE of carbon fiber increase with increase content of the carbon fiber. The last is has done make the composite carbon fiber – bio plastic can be promising materials for EMI shielding.
