Since the modern enterprises increasingly rely on the information technology (IT) in seeking both the operational efficiency and competitive advantages, IT innovation has become a critical importance to all firms. Based on the Technology Structured Model, proposed by Orlikowski (1992), the relationship between technology and organization is bidirectional. However, the previous studies on IT innovation behavior focus on the IT centralized perspective instead of the effects of IT from organizational viewpoints. Our argument is that: we need to understand not only on how the usage of IT can affect the organization (i.e., innovation adopter viewpoint), but also on how the organization can use IT innovatively (i.e., innovative usage viewpoint). But, this concept is not clearly depicted in the previous studies.
To address this research gap, this study focuses on the organizational routines of IT innovative usage (ITIU) in terms of organizational perspective. This work uses the in-depth case study approach to analyze the effects of continuing interaction between the behavior of ITIU and the organization context by using a Chang Chun Petrochemicals (CCP) case. In particular, this study explores the behavior of ITIU in terms of both performative and ostensive aspects of an organizational routine. Based on the collected evidences, this study finds the routine of ITIU can be decomposed as a six-step process and conducts a development model of ITIU from the performative aspect, and the routine of ITIU contains three tasks and conducts an organizational context development model of the routine of ITIU from the ostensive aspect. The conclusions and contributions in theoretical and practical of this work are given in the end of this dissertation.
